Kraken FPSO

Frames designed the Produced Water Treatment Package for the Kraken FPSO to process 450,000 barrels of reservoir water with heavy oil and solids per day. The package consists of a total of 5 skids, including Cyclonic Desanding and Sand Cleaning, with a total weight of 420 metric tons.

In June 2014, Frames was awarded the design and supply of the package. In September 2015 the skids were transported to the Bumi Armada’s fabrication yard in Singapore. In 2016 the FPSO sailed to the Kraken field in the UK.

In addition to the Produced Water Treatment skids, Frames also delivered the Slop Water Treatment, Electrostatic Coalescers, and Heat Exchangers for the Kraken FPSO.

Optimization to reduce costs
This project clearly shows Frames’ added value as a solution provider. As Jeroen Bergman, Product Manager at Frames Separation Technologies, stated: “Especially in challenging times, when the oil price is low, it’s important that contractors can trust on their solution providers to optimize their package to reduce costs. With our broad portfolio combined with our process know-how we were able to integrate the PWT packages for the Kraken FPSO and therewith build smaller, lighter, and faster.”
Frames has been able to reduce the plot space of the PWT package considerably by integration of two skids into one module. Furthermore, Frames has substituted their alternative process design for sand removal by utilizing desanding cyclones. This has led to high performance, compact and cost-efficient package.
Early involvement proved to be successful
According to Bergman, the key to success for this project was the early involvement for Frames during the FEED-phase to design a PWT system suitable for the application with a limited footprint.
“The low difference in density of 74 kg/m3 between the oil and water phase as well as the presence of fine particles in the produced water was a unique case for our process engineers,” says Bergman. “Additionally, our mechanical department was breaking their heads over further plot space reduction, to fit all the equipment on the vessel. Mutual efforts of the Frames and Bumi Armada Engineering Team finally led to a great solution.”
This is the second milestone for Frames in cooperation with EnQuest. In 2013, Frames delivered a Crude Separation Module for the EnQuest Knightsbridge Project in the North Sea, United Kingdom. Bumi Armada has known Frames as a reliable partner for the earlier Apache Balnaves Project and recognized the Frames strength for North Sea projects with related PED requirements.

Kraken FPSO and oil field
The Bumi Armada FPSO for the Kraken oil field will process and store crude oil before offloading it to a shuttle tanker. It has a storage capacity of 600,000 barrels of crude oil. The vessel is a converted tanker upgraded to achieve a design life of 25 years.
The Kraken Oil Field was discovered in 1985 and is one of the biggest subsea heavy-oil field projects that is under development in the UK sector of the North Sea, about 350 km north east of Aberdeen. The field has more than 137 million barrels of heavy oil as reserves and it has a production volume of 50,000 barrels of oil per day. The operator of the field is EnQuest and they are expecting the first oil in 2017.
The Produced Water Treatment system will be operated to remove heavy oil and sand from the produced water to process a water quality suitable for reinjection. Part of the water will be used to drive hydraulic submersible pumps (HSPs) for the artificial lift of the heavy oil. Reliability and performance of the Produced Water Treatment package is, therefore, essential to produce the oil.
