Teekay Petrojarl contracts Damen Shiprepair and Frames for Redeployment Upgrade of its Petrojarl I FPSO

December 19, 2014

Damen Shiprepair has been awarded an EPC contract by Teekay for the upgrade of its FPSO Petrojarl I. The Petrojarl I is a Teekay Petrojarl managed FPSO, built in 1986, which has been active in the North Sea. Its redeployment will be for the Atlanta field in Brazil. Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam, responsible for the full upgrade of the FPSO, has formed  partnerships with Frames and Nevesbu.

The Petrojarl I is contracted by Queiroz Galvão E&P (QGEP) for deployment at the Atlanta post-salt oil field in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil, to produce heavy crude oil in a water depth of 1535m. For this deployment as an "early production system", the FPSO will be extensively upgraded in The Netherlands.

With this contract, Teekay shows confidence in the combination of Damen’s ship conversion capacities and Frames' knowledge of oil and gas treatment systems. Sales Manager Europe Pieter van Vuuren: “At Frames we have extensive knowledge and experience in worldwide FPSO topside process equipment. This, together with the experience of Damen let to this success".

The unit will be customized according to the necessary specifications for operating in the Atlanta field. The topside of the Petrojarl I will be partly fitted with new process equipment and part of the existing equipment will be refurbished.  The integration of new equipment into the existing topside system will be done at the Damen yard in Schiedam, The Netherlands.

Commercial Managers Ruud Haneveer and Bas Loohuis from Damen call the project "unique". "To our knowledge an EPC Redeployment Upgrade Contract has not been carried out in Europe before.", they explain.
